Hoarding Cleanup in Star
Star is one of the fastest-growing cities in Idaho, and that growth shows up in two very different kinds of housing. There are brand-new subdivisions like Heron River, Movado Estates, and Skybreak, and there are older rural-residential parcels along the Boise River with room for a barn, a shop, or a horse setup. A hoarding cleanout looks different depending on which kind of property you're dealing with, and that affects how long the job takes and where everything ends up once it leaves the property.
Smaller subdivision lots usually mean an easier haul but less room to stage a sort. Bigger acreage parcels mean more square footage to go through, but also more outbuildings where things pile up unnoticed for years.
Where the Debris Actually Goes
Most hoarding cleanouts in Star end up at the Ada County Landfill at Hidden Hollow, off Seamans Gulch Road in the North Boise foothills, or at the Meridian Transfer Station nearby. From most of Star, that means heading east on Hwy 44 or Hwy 55.
Both sites take regular trash, construction and demolition debris, yard waste, clean wood, concrete, scrap metal, and e-waste. Mattresses and Freon-containing appliances like old fridges and window AC units go through too, but each carries its own fee, so they usually get set aside and tracked separately instead of tossed in with everything else. Large metal items drop off free at the Meridian Transfer Station, which matters if a cleanout turns up old appliances, filing cabinets, or shop scrap.
What they won't take matters just as much: hazardous waste, anything hauled in from outside Ada County, and treated or painted wood if you're trying to divert it rather than landfill it. An old camper, trailer, or boat without a title gets turned away too, which comes up more on the bigger rural lots around Star than people expect. That's part of why sorting happens as a cleanout goes, rather than loading a dumpster and figuring it out at the gate.
What Actually Moves the Price and the Timeline
A lot of what makes one hoarding cleanout different from the next isn't the size of the house. It's what's inside it and how hard it is to get to.
- How much has to come out, and how tightly it's packed into rooms, hallways, or outbuildings
- Whether it's a subdivision lot with easy driveway access or a rural parcel with a long drive, a barn, or multiple outbuildings to clear
- How much of the volume is heavy — furniture, boxed books, scrap metal — versus light bulk
- Whether items need special handling at disposal, since mattresses, tires, and Freon appliances all carry their own fee and get sorted separately
- How much is still usable or recyclable versus straight landfill trash, since sorting takes more time up front but can cut what ends up as paid disposal
- Time of year, since weather and daylight affect how fast an outdoor cleanout or a garage full of boxes actually moves
Mistakes That Slow a Cleanout Down
- Dropping a rented dumpster in the street or shoulder without checking first. In the Ada County part of Star, a container in the right-of-way needs an ACHD Temporary Use permit, and applying after it's already sitting there is backwards.
- Trying to burn old debris in the yard instead of hauling it. Middleton-Star Fire District runs a daily burn assessment, burning isn't allowed on days when air quality doesn't clear, and garbage, lumber, and construction debris aren't permitted to burn in the first place.
- Mixing everything into one load. Once trash, recyclables, and fee items get jumbled together, there's no way to send any of it to diversion, and the whole load gets handled and charged as straight trash.
- Treating Freon removal as an afterthought. Old refrigerators and window units need the Freon dealt with before they can move through most disposal paths, so it's worth planning for, not discovering on pickup day.
- Forgetting a permit if the cleanout tips into pulling out a shed or built-in structure. Star's Building Department issues demolition permits, and it's on the homeowner to get one before anything structural comes down.
A hoarding cleanout in Star goes faster, and costs less to haul, when the sorting happens before the truck shows up instead of after.
