Hoarding Cleanup in Garden City
Garden City is almost entirely surrounded by Boise, squeezed in along the river between Chinden Boulevard and the Greenbelt. That tight geography is part of why a hoarding cleanup here looks different from one a few minutes away. You've got older small homes and a handful of mobile home parks near Chinden sitting close to newer riverfront townhomes in the Waterfront District, and each type of property changes how a crew plans the job.
What's inside usually reflects that mix, and so does what happens once it leaves the house.
Where it actually goes
Garden City sits in Ada County, and the Ada County Landfill at Hidden Hollow is just minutes north, reached off Glenwood or Hill Road to Seamans Gulch Road. The Boise Transfer Station on Curtis Road is the other option for drop-offs.
The landfill takes general trash, construction and demolition debris, yard waste, mattresses, tires, Freon-containing appliances, scrap metal, clean wood, concrete, and e-waste. Tires and Freon appliances carry a disposal fee, which is one reason those items get pulled out and tracked separately during a cleanout rather than tossed in with everything else.
Hazardous materials — old chemicals, paint, propane, that kind of thing — can't go in with regular trash at the landfill. They need a household hazardous waste drop-off instead. Out-of-county waste isn't accepted either, and treated or painted wood doesn't qualify for the clean-wood diversion pile. Knowing that ahead of time is what lets a crew sort as they go instead of making a second trip.
What tends to turn up here
Garden City's housing stock runs older on one end and newer on the other, and that shapes what a hoarding job usually contains. The smaller, older homes near Chinden and the remaining mobile home parks tend to have decades of accumulation layered in — furniture, appliances, boxes of papers, and often scrap metal or old building materials from past projects.
Scrap metal and clean wood are both worth separating out, since the landfill takes them for recycling or diversion rather than straight disposal. Working electronics and usable furniture are usually better donated than hauled, and e-waste has its own recycling path too.
On the other end, the newer townhomes in the Waterfront District and other infill along the river tend to have less square footage, so clutter there is more about vertical stacking — closets, stairwells, and small storage areas packed tight rather than a garage full of stuff.
Getting the property ready
Access varies a lot block to block in Garden City, so it's worth checking a few things before a crew shows up.
In the mobile home parks along Chinden, lanes and driveways are often narrow and shared, and most pads have a small storage shed that tends to be the most packed, least accessible spot on the property. Clearing a path to it ahead of time saves real effort.
In the Waterfront District and other HOA communities, check the association's rules before anything gets placed outside — some limit where a container can sit, and if a dumpster needs to sit in the street or shoulder rather than a driveway, Garden City requires an ACHD right-of-way permit since those streets fall under county road authority.
Older homes near Glenwood or the fairgrounds area often have narrower stairs, detached garages, or additions that need to be checked separately from the main house. And because a good stretch of Garden City sits in the floodplain along the Boise River, ground-level storage or crawl spaces are worth a look too.
However the property is laid out — mobile home park, older bungalow, or new riverfront townhome — the job comes down to the same thing: sort it, separate what's recyclable or donatable, and route the rest to the right place the first time.
